How it works
Plot in, console scene out
The desk view on this page mirrors the console: 32 strips, 12 characters each, colour tokens and +48V dots.
- Load or build the plotEvery source on stage is a channel in FOH order; the desk fills from Ch 1.
- Set colour and icon per stripGroups get their colour automatically. Override any strip with the 16 tokens, including inverted ones.
- Shorten long namesA warning appears past 12 characters and the strip shows the cut-off text. Rename in the patch list.
- Export the .scn packCopy the file to USB, import it on the console into an empty scene, and load it before line check.
When to use it
Who saves time with a generated scene
- Bands carrying their own X32 or M32
- Keep names, colours and phantom states consistent between rehearsal and show. Start from the stage plot maker.
- House engineers on an X32 room
- Receive the band’s pack and have the patch named before they arrive. The input list generator shows where each name came from.
- IEM rigs
- Stereo in-ear pairs are linked and named from the monitor mix chart.
- Touring advance packs
- Send the scene with the tech rider and the stage layout. Background reading: what venues expect in a rider, how to draw the plot, and four example line-ups.
Loading the file
Import a scene from USB on X32 / M32
Save a backup of the current show first; loading a scene overwrites the values it contains.
- Prepare the stickFAT32 USB stick, .scn file at the top level.
- Open the scenes viewPress VIEW in the SCENES section and pick an empty slot.
- ImportPress UTILITY, choose the import option and select the file.
- Load and checkLoad the scene, then walk the strips against the input list.
What the scene writes
Names, colours, +48V, buses — nothing else
The file is plain text, one OSC-style line per setting, in the firmware 4.x scene syntax.
| Lines | What it sets | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| /ch/01–32/config | Channel name (12 characters), icon, colour token, source input | Written for all 32 channels; unused ones are blanked to "" 1 OFF |
| /headamp/000–031 | +48V on or off for local inputs 1–32, gain +0.0 dB | ON count equals the +48V ticks in your list |
| /bus/01–16/config | Monitor bus names, icon 63 (wedge), colour WH | Stereo IEMs get “Mix L” and “Mix R” |
| /config/buslink | Eight ON/OFF pairs for 1–2 … 15–16 | ON where a stereo IEM uses the pair |
Left exactly as it was
- EQ, compressors and gates
- FX rack and inserts
- Send levels, pans and faders
- Routing, DCAs and mute groups
- AES50 stagebox headamps (032 and up)
The 5-piece rock preset compiles to “16 named channels · 5 × +48V · 4 bus names”. The funk horn band gives 24 named channels, 10 × +48V and 6 bus names, with trumpet, sax and trombone in magenta on strips 17–19.
Colour code
Scribble strip colours by signal group
Consistent colours let an engineer find the vocal channels from across the room.
| Token | Default use |
|---|---|
| RD | Drums & Percussion |
| YE | Bass |
| GN | Guitars |
| BL | Keys |
| MG | Horns & Strings |
| CY | Vocals |
| WH | Playback, click, talkback, monitor buses |
| OFF | Unused channels |
| RDi … WHi | Inverted strip (dark background, coloured text) |
Icons
Suggested channel icons
Icon numbers follow the community X32 / M32 OSC protocol icon table (1–74). Each source gets a default you can change per strip.

Safety
Local inputs, AES50 boxes and +48V
Phantom power is written for the console’s own inputs 1–32 only.
On an X32 with an S16 or SD16 on AES50, the stagebox headamps live at /headamp/032 and above. The scene leaves them alone, so set +48V on those inputs from the console, using the input list. The README in the pack repeats this.
Ribbon mics, modeler outputs and wireless receivers are never switched on by the rules. If you tick +48V on one, the patch list warns before the scene is built, and the warning stays visible until you change it.
FAQ
Questions musicians and engineers ask
Which consoles can load the scene file?
The .scn file targets Behringer X32 and Midas M32 consoles on firmware 4.x, including the X32 Compact, Producer and Rack, which share the scene format. X-Air, WING, Yamaha and Allen & Heath desks use other formats and are not covered.
Will loading the scene wipe my EQ and gain?
The file only contains channel names, colours, icons, source numbers, +48V headamp states for local inputs 1–32, bus names and the stereo bus links. Gain is written as +0.0 dB. EQ, dynamics, gates, FX and routing are not in the file, but save your current show first anyway.
Why are names cut to 12 characters?
The X32 / M32 scribble strip shows 12 characters. The desk preview truncates exactly as the console does and warns when a name is longer, so “Kick Drum Inside” shows as “Kick Drum In”. Short names like “Kick In” or “BV 2 Gtr” read best from the mix position.
What about AES50 stageboxes like the S16 or SD16?
Headamps for AES50 stageboxes start at /headamp/032, which this file does not write. Phantom power is set for local inputs 1–32 only, and the README says so. If your inputs arrive on an S16, set +48V on those inputs at the console from the input list.
How are colours chosen?
Each signal group has an X32 colour: drums and percussion red (RD), bass yellow (YE), guitars green (GN), keys blue (BL), horns and strings magenta (MG), vocals cyan (CY) and playback white (WH). You can pick any of the 16 tokens per channel, including the inverted RDi…WHi versions.
